Expert Mole Evaluation
& Removal
Moles are common skin growths, and while most are harmless, some can be a sign of skin cancer. It’s important to have any new or changing moles evaluated by a doctor. At Advanced Family Care, Dr. Magued Ibrahim is experienced in examining moles for our patients in Lake Mary and DeBary and can perform a simple in-office removal if necessary.

Why Remove a Mole?
There are two main reasons to have a mole removed: for medical testing or for cosmetic purposes.
Medical Reasons
The primary medical reason for mole removal is to test for skin cancer (melanoma). If a mole looks suspicious, a biopsy is necessary. We look for the ABCDEs of melanoma: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, and Evolving or changing mole.
Cosmetic Reasons
Some people choose to remove moles that are not medically concerning but are in a location where they are bothersome (e.g., getting caught on clothing or jewelry) or are considered unsightly.
The Mole Removal Procedure
Mole removal is a quick in-office procedure. The area is first numbed with a local anesthetic. Dr. Ibrahim will then use one of two common methods:
Shave Excision: A surgical blade is used to shave the mole off level with the skin.
Surgical Excision: The entire mole is cut out, and the skin is closed with a few stitches.

Will the removal leave a scar?
Any procedure that breaks the skin has the potential to leave a scar. However, Dr. Ibrahim uses techniques designed to minimize scarring. The size and appearance of the scar will depend on the size of the mole and the removal method used.
Is mole removal painful?
The area will be numbed with a local anesthetic, so you should not feel any pain during the procedure. You may have some mild soreness afterward.
Is mole removal covered by insurance?
If a mole is removed for medical reasons (i.e., it is suspicious and needs to be biopsied), the procedure is typically covered by insurance. If a mole is removed for purely cosmetic reasons, it is usually not covered.
What is the recovery time?
Recovery is very quick. You will be given simple wound care instructions. If you have stitches, you will need to return in about a week to have them removed.
What are the ABCDEs of melanoma?
This is a simple guide to help you spot potentially cancerous moles. Look for:
“A”symmetry, irregular “B”order, multiple “C”olors, “D”iameter larger than 6mm, and “E”volving or changing moles.
