PERSONALIZED, UNHURRIED CARE

Our Laceration Repair Process

We provide a streamlined and comfortable process to ensure your wound is treated quickly and effectively.

Immediate Assessment and Cleaning

First, we will gently but thoroughly clean the wound to remove any bacteria or debris, which is crucial for preventing infection. We will then assess the depth and severity of the laceration.

Anesthesia

To ensure a painless procedure, Dr. Ibrahim will administer a local anesthetic to completely numb the area around the wound.

Expert Wound Closure

Using the most appropriate technique for your specific wound, Dr. Ibrahim will carefully close the laceration. This may involve:
Sutures (Stitches): The most common method for closing deeper cuts.
Surgical Glue (Dermabond): medical-grade adhesive used for smaller, clean-edged cuts.
Steri-Strips: Special adhesive tapes used for very minor lacerations.

Aftercare Instructions

We will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your wound at home, including how to keep it clean, when to change the dressing, and signs of infection to watch for. We will also let you know when to return for suture removal, if necessary.

When Does a Cut Need Stitches?

It can be hard to know if a cut is serious enough for medical attention. You should seek professional laceration repair if the wound:

– Is deep enough to expose fatty tissue, muscle, or bone.
– Is gaping open and the edges do not come together easily.
– Is located over a joint, such as an elbow or knee.
– Bleeds profusely and does not stop with direct pressure after 10-15 minutes.
– Is on the face or another area where scarring is a concern.
– Was caused by a dirty or rusty object.
– Contains debris like glass or gravel.
– Is from an animal or human bite.

Should I go to the emergency room or your office?

For most common lacerations, our office is a faster, more affordable, and more comfortable alternative to the ER. However, you should go to the nearest emergency room if the bleeding is uncontrollable, if you have lost sensation or movement, if you can see bone, or if you have a life-threatening injury.

No. We will use a local anesthetic to ensure the area is completely numb before we begin cleaning and repairing the wound. You should not feel any pain during the procedure.

While any cut that goes through the full thickness of the skin will leave a scar, proper and prompt wound closure is the most important step in minimizing its appearance. Keeping the wound clean, moist with antibiotic ointment, and protected from the sun after it has healed will also help reduce scarring.

If the wound was caused by a dirty or rusty object and you have not had a tetanus booster in the last 5-10 years, a tetanus shot may be recommended. Dr. Ibrahim will assess your vaccination status.

The timing for suture removal depends on the location of the wound. Stitches on the face are typically removed in 3-5 days, while stitches on a joint may stay in for 10-14 days. We will schedule a follow-up appointment for you.
